GSMA Intelligence’s report, “Smartphone forecasts and assumptions, 2007-2020” states that currently smartphones account for one in every three mobile connections. This means that it represents more than two billion connections.
Other key highlights:
- The report pegs India as the fourth largest market for hi-tech phones in 2014
- Number of smartphone connections will grow three fold by 2020. This will account for 2/3rds of the nine billion mobile connections at that point of time
- Developing world overtook the developed world in terms of Smartphone connections in 2011
- It is projected that by 2020 4 out of every 5 smartphone connection worldwide will come from developing world
Interestingly, Asia Pacific accounts for almost half of the global smartphone connections, even though penetration in the region is calculated at below 40 percent.
As per an article in the Economic Times, Asia Pacific today accounts for about half of global smartphone connections, even though smartphone penetration in the region is currently calculated at below 40 per cent.
