This week, we connected with Surabhee Gupta from HDFC Life to know about her journey in the digital marketing world and her learnings.

Here’s a look at her regular working day and what she has to say about this dynamic sector.

1. How does your typical working day look like?

I usually start my day by planning the work to be done ahead. This includes creating a to-do list,
prioritising the job depending on their urgency & importance, checking the meetings scheduled,
overseeing the team & work, and finally review the status of the work done the previous day/week. The
most exciting part of our job is that there is no fixed format of our work. One day we would be busy with
back-to-back meetings, while on other days we would be creating strategy & guiding the team to help
them meet their targets & deadlines or making presentations for Management & Board Members.

2. What are the most helpful tools according to you that help you get the job done efficiently?

There are various tools that we use on a day to day basis like Adobe Campaign Management tool
(comprising of Analytics, Target, Audience Manager (DMP) and Campaign), Google (GA and Google
Adwords), Competition tracking tools like Adby, a fraud detection tool and Kenscio. But the most
important thing here is a team of skillful resources who know how to use these tools efficiently and use
the data extracted in the most effective manner.

3. How did you get into digital marketing? What do you love about your job?

I always wanted to be a Journalist. Digital Marketing happened by chance. 13 years back there was hardly any
digital sector or website in India. I started working on SEO for UK based websites. I started loving on how we
used to crack Google algorithm and get the websites to rank on Google.co.uk sitting in India. I love the
ever-changing dynamics and the innovations that happen daily. It keeps me on my feet and doesn’t make
me get bored ever.

4. Tell us about your hobbies. What do you do to unwind from the busy working life?

I usually start by planning my day & end it by losing all the stress, fatigue and calories consumed in the entire
day by going to the gym for an hour or so and then read a book before going to bed. Since it is monsoon
season, I usually enjoy going to various places for trekking, camping or river rafting. Nature provides me
with a perfect getaway to unwind from the fast and busy Life of Mumbai.

5. Any advice for people who want to get into this dynamic digital marketing space?

If you are a passionate person who loves a day full of challenges, deadlines and learnings then digital
marketing is for you. Especially, if you are a woman it gives us a perfect place to display our creative side
along with an understanding of the customer’s needs and requirements without really meeting them.
