We connected with Sumon Chandra from Housejoy.in to know about his digital marketing journey and understand how his normal work day looks like.

Here’s a look at how he spends his day and what advice he has for digital marketing enthusiasts.

  1. How does your normal working day look like?

Usually, my day starts early with a quick check of my to-do list for the day. After reaching office, I go through a couple of meetings and team reviews to keep the team progress on track. My maximum time is dedicated to the team sharing thoughts and brainstorming ideas to grow the business and ourselves in the process. Apart from this, I keep a few hours to analyse data and mark the product and business flow. Before wrapping up my ‘task-loaded’ day, I always make sure to learn something new, be it a few new words or a new tool.

  1. What are the most helpful tools according to you that help you get the job done efficiently?

A Digital Marketer is always surrounded by tools, but what really helps me get through the day and accomplish my tasks faster are:

Singular – A marketing intelligence attribution platform.

PowerBI – A Microsoft tool for data presentation and management.

Web Engage –  A marketing automation tool.

Localytics – An app analytics tool.

Google Analytics – An analytics tool from Google.

Salesforce – A customer relationship management tool for  business.

  1. How did you get into digital marketing? What do you love about your job?

I completed my B.Tech and started working as a data analyst. After working for a year and a half, in 2011, I opted to take up a Digital Marketing course in NIIT(it was a booming industry and I thought, I would give it a try) and then grew my hunger for knowledge of Adwords. It pulled me like a bee to nectar. I found myself learning programmatic and managing DSP and SSP to manage inventory. This gave me a foundation for my Digital Marketing career. Since 2013, I have been working for many app-based companies, lying in different industries such as food, OTA, education, and home service.

The thing I love the most about my job is that it always keeps me on the edge, helping me evolve and develop to make my organization reach greater heights. Constant changes, new hacks, updates, rising competition, and the challenge to become the best is what I love the most about my profession.

  1. Tell us about your hobbies. What do you do to unwind from the busy working life?

I enjoy meditation, yoga and long drives a lot! These are some of the best ways to relax my mind and take a break from the workaholic life. Apart from this, I also like playing TT and read books (mostly motivational and fiction). I would strongly recommend reading the book “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” by Robin Sharma, and “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Victor Frankl.

  1. Any advice for people who want to get into this dynamic digital marketing space?

Digital Marketing is a vast area to explore and it cannot be covered by a mere book. To become a good digital marketer, one must become a master of many domains that lie within digital marketing. If I have to advise a fresher who wants to get into the world of digital marketing, I would recommend starting with SEO.

Search Engine Optimization is a domain where one can learn a lot of things to grow the business organically. With paid marketing a goal is easy to achieve but what if there is a limit to the expense and one has to grow within that limit? That’s where the challenge is. With the help of SEO, this can be achieved easily. Having a growth-hack mindset would also allow one to expand in other areas of marketing in the process of learning. Sure, it will take about 6 months to learn and understand everything within and around it but knowledge doesn’t come overnight, does it?
