News : Twitter acquires social media start up Gnip

Yes, it is official! Twitter has acquired Gnip, a social data start up company. Gnip is one of the four companies that has access to Twitter’s firehouse (the full stream of tweets). Gnip works on analysing the infromation from the firehouse and resells it. Its focus is primarily on businesses interested in understanding ho consumers view them, more of reputation management.

The other companies which have access to its firehouse are Datasift and Topsy (acquired by Apple last year for $200 million in Dec 2013).

With this move we can say that Twitter has gotten serious about Data licensing. It may also be a move for Twitter to validate the data and not just focus on money alone.
