Since the invention of TV, the dynamics of entertainment have changed profoundly. In no time, TV became an integral part of our lives and we started enjoying the offerings we received through this channel for our entertainment, informational as well as educational purpose. However, with the digital revolution, we now have a host of different ways for consuming content and taking care of our entertainment needs. Has this digital world really altered the popularity and usage of TV content? Well, that’s exactly what we asked the Indian consumers in our last survey. We asked about their preferred way for watching their favorite TV shows.

Let’s quickly have a look at the results from this survey.

The graph above surely speaks volumes about how people are slowly switching away from their television sets and opting for other ways where they can watch their favorite shows. Mobile apps definitely seem to be very popular with 61.9% respondents saying that they watch their favorite TV shows through these apps. Users who still prefer TV are at 14.3% and there is a small chunk of them (4.8%) who prefer TV as well as mobile apps depending on the show timings and their availability. There are also a small set of people (4.8%) who prefer desktop/ laptop, smart TV, OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime.Does this mean that TV is slowly losing its importance and the digital platforms are taking over? Well, only time can tell us that. This also gives an alert for the TV channels and TV show makers to understand the new-age consumers and work on providing them the kind of content they like as per their preference. Till then let us wait and watch how TV and digital platforms innovate and tweak their strategies and work towards being the preferred platform amongst the consumers.

Here are some scenarios shared by some of the respondents on this aspect:

“Content available on Netflix, Prime Video is way better in all aspects than the contemporary TV content.”

– Rewa Upasani

“I think it’s no more about TV shows today. Favorite shows are available on omni platforms today. Further, you can tap your shows for anytime anywhere watching. Improved broadband makes it further easy.”

– Kalpana Gupta

Now that we know about peoples’ preference about watching their favorite shows, it’s time for the next question. This week we want to know about subscription for various OTT platforms. Our question is ‘Do you have a paid subscription for any OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, Voot, etc?
